Black jacked

“Black Jacked” is an archival-based photo project I created for Black Body and the Lens, a graduate course taught by Dr. Deborah Willis at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. The foundation for this project began a year earlier in my Archival Projects class, taught by artist and former professor Lorie Novak. Revisiting this earlier work felt natural as it’s a project I’m deeply passionate about. My love for archives began with my own family’s photographs and has since expanded into a broader exploration of Black visual history. The central thesis guiding Black Jacked is: How does foregrounding Black glamour through archival imagery, presented in a contemporary playing card format, challenge historical erasures and reframe narratives of Black beauty, style, and cultural excellence? Each suit within the deck represents a distinct facet of Black life and creativity: Clubs for Vision, Spades for Sport, Hearts for Performance, and Diamonds for Adornment. I hope this game invites you to celebrate the richness and resilience of Black glamour across time.
